I have read an article explaining child development and the pros and cons of technology for children in their early years. It made me think of how my little brother is doing progressing through the years. He has got so accustomed to watch T.V or playing on his mobile video game. Technology can be a social hindrance if there is no discipline (Young). My little brother is not very disciplined when it comes to video games, due to the fact that my parents are not really home all the time. I realize with the family always being busy it is hard for my little brother to learn how to socialize and to use technology in a productive manner. By using technology in a productive manner I mean using it to better reading skills, and writing skills. Also the limit of use of technology will help him develop better social skills by giving him more time to go out and socialize more with others. Hoping technology will be more of a support to my little brother, discipline is rather necessary.
I want to make this use of technology more beneficial towards his education rather than him playing games all day.

Jon, This is both an interesting and timely post. I think to my daughter (who is 2.5) coming down the stairs this morning and lamenting the missing "Ipad!" that she was hunting for (and which my husband took with him to work today). How does your little brother use technology? You mention that he has access, but what is the discipline like in your home? Is the access unrestricted? What amount of usage does Young suggest is appropriate for your little brother? Show us some specifics to your situation so that we readers can follow your judgment call whether the situation is more positive or negative. Provide "texture" as you support your main points here. This is a good post that can become great with some additional layering.
ReplyDeleteThis area of research is very interesting to me. In fact, my mother works for the county on this very issue. It's amazing to see how quickly children can pick up new technology. Looking back, it's hard, at this point, to say for sure how technology effected me as a child. Mental effects aside, I wear glasses, and even though others in my family do too, I can't help but wonder if too much 'screen-time' only exacerbated an already existing problem. That said, I know plenty of "geeks" who spend even more time at the computer, or on mobile devices than I do, and whose vision far surpasses mine (even with glasses.)
